The Feast of St Martin

Oil Painting (214 x 122cms) by Laurence Smith

The Wine of

St Martin

This very large painting differs from the others in that it is not based upon an engraving of Bruegel's, but on a fragment of one of his paintings which survives in a museum in Vienna. The complete picture was copied by a contempory of Bruegel's, as an engraving, before the painting was largely destroyed, so we know from that engraving what the original looked like.

I have copied the surviving fragment and used the engraving to re-create the painting to its original dimensions, using a colour scheme that Bruegel might have chosen.

The giant wine barrel and the fight for a drink are probably celebrations that he saw in Italy on St. Martin's Day
